An orderly garden over time can become a wild crowd of trees and shrubs, especially if initially over-planted or left unpruned for some time. However, all is not lost. Often removal or moving of plants can help, but pruning is essential when renovating an old garden. Keep in mind that it took time to create the chaos, and it will take time to renovate it properly. Pruning techniques for size reduction, thinning and plant definition will be discussed, as well as how and when to do more radical renovation.

No matter how much scientific evidence to the contrary, there are certain “garden miracles” that just won’t go away. Landscape professionals can quickly lose their credibility – and cause damage to plants and soil – when they end up promoting products and practices that aren’t based on reputable science. In this seminar, we will discuss several of these products and practices that have no underlying science to support them. At the end, we’ll examine some evidence-based alternatives to use in gardens and
landscapes.  Handouts will be provided.
